The children had a great time at the community garden. We enjoyed the sunshine but had to be careful not to get sun burnt. The children got to plant seeds, make compost and dig for worms.
We have had another busy term. We had a fantastic time at Slimbridge and the children have written recounts about our day and what we learnt. The children have made some fantastic improvements to their writing this term and most of them are joining their letters and thinking about the size they need to be along with their presentation. I am very proud of them. Many of the children have shared their writing with Mrs Benion.
The children have enjoyed this terms work in science and finding out about animals that hatch from eggs and those that have live young. They are able to identify insects, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians by their different features. They learned that dolphins are in the mammal group! In Maths the children are using their place value knowledge to help them solve addition and subtraction problems involving two-digit numbers. We have been doing lots of mental maths work on finding two numbers that make 20 and finding patterns to help recall these quickly. This week is parents evening and I am looking forward to sharing all that your children have achieved as well as chatting about how you can help them take their next steps in their learning. Welcome back. The children have already been busy and have come up with lots of interesting questions for us to research our new theme 'See How We Grow.'
The children are familiarising themselves with the story 'The Ugly Duckling' in preparation for our first big write this term. We have had some fantastic wow moments in maths using reasoning skills to work out problems using two-digit numbers. Our classroom has a giant nest, where the children can nestle down to read and an animal rescue centre. We have a giant egg which the children are guessing what might be inside. We borrowed a box from the museum to compare modern day toys with toys from the past. The children had an opportunity to sketch toys and use mark making to help colour and give effect to their pictures.
We have started looking at a non-fiction text which will lead to the children writing their own information sheets on toys. In maths we are working on addition and subtraction. The children are writing number sentences and using part, part whole model as well as concrete apparatus to solve maths problems. During Anti-bullying week we discussed how unique we are and made puzzle pieces which we are joining together to show how we all work together to create a happy and friendly environment. We used fruit to show how hurt we can feel when people do unkind things and then each paid another person a compliment. Everyone looked great with their odd socks, thank you for the money you donated to help Children in Need. This week we have a museum box in school with toys from the past. The children are enjoying exploring what they have been made from and comparing them with toys today.
The children have been learning about firework safety. We hope they enjoy any events and fireworks displays that they experience this weekend. In our story making we have started to change parts of the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Ask your child what characters are now in their story. Thank you to all the parents who came into learning together. Remember if you do have any questions or wish for support in helping your child to read please do come in and speak to us. On the 20th October Robins have been investigating different types of weather and what season to expect these weathers to happen. We discussed different extreme weathers, what can happen and how to stay safe. We went outside with with a wind anemometer to measure how windy it was that day.
On the 10th October Robins enjoyed making bread. The children were able to mix dry and wet ingredients to make the dough and used tools to cut, flatten and roll the dough. We used the bread as part of our Harvest display and the children really enjoyed tasting what they had made that afternoon.
Robins enjoyed a great visit to Batsford Arboretum. The children had an informative talk from the education officer and we investigated the grounds, going on leaf hunts, seeing the sculptures and we spotted the beautiful deer. The children have recounted their visit in their writing this week in class. A big thank you to the parents who came to help.
Robins have been working really hard on their 'See how we grow' theme! Inspired by bird nests, we did some weaving. We collected some natural materials from around school and are busy creating weaves using stick frames. We also weaved paper, the metal fence using different types of fabric and baskets using different string and wool. We did a really amazing job! Last Friday we went to visit the community gardens. We had so much fun! When we arrived Jo and Andy gave us a drink of homemade squash, we chose from orange, lemon and elderflower. Jo showed us around the garden, we looked at the different plants growing there, including lots of fruit and vegetables. We picked strawberries then we ate them! We looked at how compost is made and then planted some sunflower seeds using the compost. We also raked some flower beds to take the weeds out and played a game matching seeds and their flowers.
